Kenya & Zanzibar: Safari & Surf

Note: Below is our planning itinerary. We are putting together a final itinerary with set dates and pricing.

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi, Kenya

Travelers arrive into Nairobi today for a two-week safari in the magical lands of Kenya and Zanzibar. As you exit customs, you’ll be met by a representative of WAI and transferred to our hotel located strategically in Nairobi. Since flights generally arrive in the evening, no group activities are planned until tomorrow.

Day 2: Nairobi – Lake Nakuru (BLD)

Following breakfast, we board clean and comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles and head north into the dramatic Great Rift Valley en route to the “Birds Paradise” of Lake Nakuru National Park. Our afternoon game drive treats us to the first of many quintessential wildlife panoramas as we hunt (with our cameras) for Nakuru’s famous flamingo and rhino populations. We wrap up our first thrilling day on safari with dinner and an overnight at a local game lodge.

Day 3: Lake Nakuru – Lake Elementaita (BLD)

Lake Elementaita Bird Walk – 5 km, rated 1A

This morning’s short drive to Lake Elementaita continues our exploration of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley Lakes Region (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). We lace up our boots today for a guided stroll along the lovely soda shoreline of Elementaita, soaking up rainbow shades of the many winged residents of the lake, including storks, pelicans, plovers, and more pink flamingos. A relaxing afternoon and evening at our stunningly-set lake-view lodge provides ample opportunity for more bird-watching or an optional bonus walk.

Day 4: Lake Elementaita – Maasai Mara (BLD)

We rise early this morning for an eagerly anticipated drive to one of the natural wonders of the world, Maasai Mara National Reserve. Rolling grasslands of Maasai Mara mark the northern extension of Tanzania’s famed Serengeti Plains and are equally blessed with an astonishing array of wildlife. Following arrival and lunch at the reserve, an afternoon game drive takes us in search of the Big 5 (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, and Leopard) and many other spectacular species (including herds of migrating wildebeest). We return from safari for dinner and the first of two nights at the game lodge.

Day 5: Activities in Maasai Mara National Reserve (BLD)

Maasai Manyatta (Village) Walk – 5 km, rated 1A

A well-reviewed, once-in-a-lifetime optional hot air balloon safari over Maasai Mara is available early this morning. The three hour experience includes unique airborne wildlife viewing and a bush breakfast when you land.

Official activities begin today with a morning game drive among the iconic East African landscape of the Mara. Following a walk with the colorful Maasai tribe to one of their manyattas (villages), and an unforgettable glimpse into the daily lives of these friendly savannah dwellers, a bush dinner rounds out our evening.

Day 6: Maasai Mara – Lake Naivasha (BLD)

Crescent Island Walk – 5 km, rated 1A

Our caravan of Land Cruisers takes us east this morning, back across the Great Rift Valley to large freshwater Lake Naivasha for a two-night stay at a colonial lodge. Following check-in and lunch, we cruise through hippo-infested waters to Crescent Island, a protruding rim of a collapsed volcanic crater. After a memorable walk on the island, we return to our lodge for dinner.

Day 7: Activities from Lake Naivasha (BLD)

Hell’s Gate National Park Walk – 9 km, rated 2A

Viewing animals from the safety of your vehicle is terrific, but today we have the remarkable opportunity at Hell’s Gate National Park to walk among an African landscape teeming with herds of big game like giraffe, zebra, and eland. This guided (and safe) walk exposes you not only to a rich variety of fauna but also to geological wonders and dramatic steep-sided valleys. Our all-day walking and wildlife safari includes a picnic lunch and a host of unforgettable highlights.

Day 8: Lake Naivasha – Amboseli National Park (BLD)

Anticipation builds during our morning drive to southern Kenya and our first sighting of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, the rooftop of Africa. Standing over 19,000 feet above sea level, this highest free-standing mountain in the world is just across the Tanzania border from our destination today, Amboseli National Park. Following a school visit and lunch, the afternoon game drive in Amboseli treats us to some of the continent’s best elephant viewing. Post-pachyderm plans include dinner and a relaxing evening at our game lodge.

Day 9: Amboseli – Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania (BLD)

Lake Manyara Evening Walk – 8 km, rated 1A

With Kenya in our rearview mirror, we cross the border this morning into Tanzania, changing drivers and guides, en route to lunch at a coffee lodge. This afternoon we enter Lake Manyara National Park, home to the famous “tree-climbing lions.” Our first evening in Tanzania includes a guided walk through the Marang forest of southern Manyara, followed by a night-time game drive in the park; we finish at a distinctive forest camp lodging.

Day 10: Lake Manyara – Ngorongoro (BLD)

Mto wa Mbu Village Walk – 5 km, rated 1A

The morning begins with a cultural tour and walk in nearby Mto wa Mbu village, with its lively market and abundance of palms, baobabs, and acacia trees. Following lunch, we experience another wonderful facet of tribal life in East Africa, with a visit to the Hadzabe tribe, who will teach us their hunting techniques including the ever-useful art of crafting poisonous arrows.  Dinner and a two-night stay will be at Ngorongoro Farm House.

Day 11: Activities from Ngorongoro (BLD)

Today’s Eden-like theme begins with a stop at Olduvai Gorge Prehistoric Site and Museum.  This unique geological canyon is the site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s famous discoveries of early hominid fossils, earning this region the nickname “Cradle of Mankind”. A picnic lunch at the rim of Ngorongoro Crater serves as a mouth-watering appetizer to the day’s main course—an unforgettable afternoon game drive on the floor of the crater. At 20 km wide, Ngorongoro is one of the largest calderas in the world, providing some of the planet’s most spectacular close-range wildlife viewing.

Day 12: Ngorogngoro - Arusha (BLD)

Maasai Farm House Walk – 5 km, rated 1A

This morning’s walk is guided by a Maasai tribesman, taking us through a local farm to learn Maasai culture, plant use, and customs. Following an early lunch, we drive to Arusha, panning more delightful East African scenery en route, before checking in to our lodge for a relaxing afternoon and a farewell dinner together.

Day 13: Depart from Arusha (BD)

Departure day begins with a drive back across the border into Kenya, where lunch on your own is enjoyed at an ostrich farm, with an optional ostrich ride for those feeling brave. Arriving into the capital city of Nairobi, dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant will serve as a memorable closing meal before being transferred to the airport to catch your flight home, leaving with a suitcase full of enchanting experiences from our time together in East Africa.
