Walking is the oldest form of exploration — and we believe it's still the purest. For 37 years, we've designed walking adventures from scratch, put two guides on every trip, and kept groups small enough that every traveler feels like they belong. More than half the people on any given trip have traveled with us before.
Every WAI adventure includes hand-picked accommodations, many meals, private ground transportation, two experienced WAI guides, local experts on international tours, all planned excursions and admissions, and daily walk guidance with options for every pace. You book your flights — we handle everything on the ground.
The full breakdown is on every tour page, or visit How We Travel for the details.
Our travelers come back with stories they tell for years. Friendships that last long after the trip ends. And the quiet confidence that comes from doing something meaningful together.
My first concern was whether I'd be able to do the hiking — mainly the uphill challenges. I was tired on the long hauls, but I made it. I especially appreciated the option to choose a shorter walk when I needed to. And when I stumbled a couple of times on an uphill stretch, our guide Gerard was right there.
The scenery was spectacular, the food was incredible, and the hotels were charming. But what made this trip unforgettable was the people — both the guides and the other travelers. We laughed every day.
I've traveled with WAI six times now. Every trip is different, but the quality never changes. They take care of everything so you can just enjoy the experience. I've already booked my seventh.
You told us where you want to walk next — and we listened. Pre-registration is now open for all 30 destinations. A fully refundable $200 deposit secures your priority spot before booking opens.
Every WAI adventure is led by two experienced guides — so there's always someone to answer your questions, help if you need to slow down, or share a story about the place you're exploring.

Scott has been exploring the world on foot since he was a kid chasing waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge — and he hasn't slowed down since. With over 150 WAI tours led across all seven continents and nearly 50 countries, he brings a geography nerd's curiosity and a lifelong friend's warmth to every trip.

Hugo has spent nearly 25 years building journeys that bring people closer to the land beneath their feet. The founder of Borealis, a Portuguese outdoor experience company, he collaborated with WAI for over a decade before joining forces to bring even more unique experiences to the table. He's at his best on the trails of Portugal and Spain — where his roots run deep and every village has a story he already knows.

Tim has been part of the WAI family since 2003 — first spending summers on the road between school years as a high school choral director, and now, since retiring from teaching, guiding and planning tours full time. He's the person who answers the office phone, builds the logistics behind the scenes, and still lights up when history comes alive on the ground.
Family reunion, alumni trip, corporate retreat, or just a group of friends who want to explore together — WAI designs private walking adventures for groups of 10 or more. Not every request is the right fit, and we'll be honest about that upfront. But if your trip aligns with what WAI does best, we'd love to talk.
