GUIDED WALKING TOURS

The World Comes Alive on Foot

Some of the most memorable travel moments happen between the landmarks — rounding a bend to a view you didn’t expect, catching a conversation with a local shopkeeper, feeling cobblestones under your feet while the morning light breaks over a village square. That’s what a walking vacation is: travel at a pace that lets you actually be in a place, not just pass through it.

Walking Adventures International has been designing guided walking tours since 1989. We’ve led groups across all seven continents — from the volcanic trails of the Azores to the red-rock canyons of Utah, from the Nile to the Norwegian coast. Every tour is built from scratch by our team, not repackaged from another company. And more than half the travelers on any given trip have walked with us before.

If you love being on your feet and you’re curious about what’s around the next corner, you’re in the right place.

What a Walking Tour Actually Looks Like

A WAI walking tour isn’t a march. It’s a curated travel experience where walking is the way you explore — through historic cities, along coastal paths, across national parks, through vineyard country and village lanes.

A typical day starts with breakfast at the hotel. Your guides send the day’s plan the evening before — where you’re walking, what to expect, what to bring. Most mornings involve a walk, anywhere from a couple of miles to six or seven, depending on the tour. A motorcoach takes you to the starting point and meets you at the far end, so you’re never carrying more than a daypack. Luggage moves between hotels without you lifting a finger.

But walking isn’t the only thing you do. Tours blend walking days with cultural visits, museum stops, boat rides, cooking demonstrations, and free time to explore on your own. Lunches are sometimes a group affair at a restaurant your guides have scouted; other days you’re free to wander. Evenings might mean a group dinner or an independent night out — your guides always have restaurant recommendations so you’re never guessing.

Rest days are built into longer tours. And every single walk is optional. If you want to take a morning off, your guides help you rejoin the group at the next stop.

How We’re Different from Other Walking Holiday Companies

Plenty of companies offer walking vacations. Here’s what sets WAI apart.

Every tour is built from the ground up. Our team researches, scouts, and designs each itinerary from scratch. We don’t buy pre-packaged tours from other operators and rebrand them. When you walk with us, you’re walking a route we chose because we’ve walked it ourselves.

Two WAI guides travel with every group. One leads, one sweeps — so no one falls behind unnoticed. This is unusual in the industry, and it makes a real difference to the daily experience. On international tours, licensed local guides join as well, adding cultural depth and language fluency.

Groups stay small. Every group is kept intentionally small, so you’re traveling with a community, not a crowd. There’s room for real conversation, shared meals that don’t require a megaphone, and the flexibility to adapt when weather or opportunity calls for a change.

Destinations rotate every year. WAI doesn’t run the same tours year after year. Each season brings a fresh roster, shaped by traveler interest and our team’s research. That’s why more than half of our travelers come back — there’s always somewhere new.

Since 1989, on all seven continents. Thirty-seven years of walking the world — from Antarctica to the Azores. That’s not a marketing claim. It’s a track record.

Finding the Right Walking Vacation for You

Not sure whether a trip is right for your pace? Every WAI tour is rated using our Adventure Pace system, which gives you two clear numbers before you book:

Tour Pace (1–5) measures the overall rhythm of the trip — how many hotel changes, how packed the schedule, how much ground you cover. A 1 is relaxed with plenty of downtime. A 5 is a full-on adventure with early mornings and ambitious itineraries.

Walk Challenge (1–5) measures the walks themselves — distance, terrain, elevation, and surface type. A 1 means mostly flat paths and paved streets. A 5 means steep climbs, rocky trails, and serious mileage.

A tour rated Pace 2 / Challenge 3 has a relaxed schedule with moderately demanding walks. A tour rated Pace 4 / Challenge 1 moves fast but walks easy terrain. The two numbers together tell you far more than a generic “moderate” label ever could.

And on any given day, walks are optional. Shorter alternative routes are often available on more challenging days. You choose what suits you that morning — every morning.

Guided Walking Tours for Every Kind of Curiosity

WAI isn’t a one-note company. The walking vacations we design span a wide range of landscapes, cultures, and styles.

Cultural walks in Europe and beyond. Walk through medieval villages, along vineyard lanes, and across historic city centers with local experts who bring the stories to life. Past and current tours have explored Ireland, the Channel Islands, Portugal, Egypt, and more.

National park adventures. From Utah’s red-rock arches to the volcanic landscapes of the Azores, WAI designs walking tours through some of the world’s most dramatic natural terrain — always with logistics handled and guides who know the trails.

Expeditions and wildlife. For travelers ready for something bigger, WAI has led groups to Svalbard for polar wildlife, Namibia for desert and savanna, and New Zealand for landscapes that earned their reputation honestly.

Seasonal and special-interest tours. Tulip festivals in Washington State, fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains, Christmas markets in Québec — some trips are built around a moment in time.

River cruises with walking. A few tours combine the comfort of river cruising with daily guided walks at each port of call — a different rhythm that works well for travelers who want both.
