Malta & Gozo: Temples, Carnival & the Honey-Colored Isles

Malta sits at the crossroads of everything — Europe, Africa, the Middle East — and every civilization that passed through left its mark. In nine days, you'll walk through 5,000-year-old temples that predate Stonehenge, cruise the Grand Harbour where the Knights of St. John held off the Ottoman Empire, and stand on cliffs where the blue Mediterranean shimmers below.

But this is also a tour about the Malta that tourists miss. You'll learn to make ftira — the Maltese flatbread — with a local baker in Valletta, then eat it still warm from the oven. You'll ride tuk-tuks through Gozo's rural lanes, stopping to walk down to hidden caves and clifftop viewpoints. And on your last evening, you'll taste wines at a Gozo winery before a farewell dinner in a restaurant that's been feeding islanders for generations.

The timing is deliberate. Your three nights on Gozo coincide with Malta's Carnival — parades, music, elaborate floats, and the kind of local celebration that hasn't been sanitized for tourists. Victoria's narrow streets come alive, and you're there to walk right into it.

What Sets This Tour Apart

Carnival on Gozo · Signature

Carnival on Gozo, not the tourist version

Most travelers who time a Malta trip around Carnival end up in Valletta with the cruise crowds. Your three nights are on Gozo, where Victoria's Carnival is older, smaller, and authentically local — handmade floats, satirical costumes, street music below the walls of the Cittadella. The hotel is a four-minute taxi from the heart of it. Go and come as you please.

Ancient Temples · Heritage

Temples older than the pyramids — and the time to actually walk them

Hagar Qim and Mnajdra were built between 3600 and 2500 BC, putting them ahead of Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids. Most tours stop for thirty minutes; you'll walk both temple complexes properly, with a local Maltese specialist guide who can explain what archaeologists still don't understand about them.

Three Islands · Reach

Three islands, one tour — including a full circumnavigation of Comino

Malta's archipelago has three inhabited islands. Most walking tours do Malta only. You'll spend five nights on Malta, three on Gozo, and a full day on Comino — population four — walking 7 to 8 kilometers around the entire coastline past sea caves, abandoned watchtowers, and the Blue Lagoon. The speedboat in, the packed lunch, the boat home: it's a day most operators reduce to a thirty-minute photo stop.

Gozo by Tuk-Tuk · Access

Gozo by tuk-tuk, not coach

Five vehicles, five or six travelers each, weaving through countryside lanes coaches can't reach. Stops at the Dwejra Inland Sea, the Mixta Cave, the salt pans, Ramla Bay, and the Cittadella in Victoria. It's the kind of access that requires local relationships — the kind we've built.

Hands-on Culture · Immersion

Hands-on culture, not just sightseeing

You'll spend a midday in Valletta learning to make ftira — the Maltese flatbread — with a local baker at Eddie's, shaping the dough yourself and pulling it out of the oven warm for lunch. On your last day, you'll taste three Gozitan wines paired with a ftira lunch at Tal-Massar Winery, in a farmhouse setting that's quintessential Gozo.

Hotel Pairing · Comfort

A four-star Malta hotel and a five-star Gozo resort

The DoubleTree by Hilton in St. Paul's Bay sits on the waterfront with Mediterranean views from your room. The Kempinski San Lawrenz on Gozo is a five-star countryside retreat — the kind of property that justifies the trip on its own. Two contrasting bases, both walkable to where you need to be.

Solo Travel · Value

Solo-friendly pricing

Many European walking tours price single supplements above $1,000. Ours is $436 — Malta's contract structure makes solo travel especially affordable, and the small-group atmosphere is built around travelers attending alone or with companions.

Day 1
Arrivals & Welcome
Welcome to Malta. Transfers from Malta International Airport are arranged throughout the day. Once everyone has arrived, gather for a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel — your first taste of Maltese hospitality and a chance to meet your fellow travelers.
Day 2
Valletta — The Fortress City
1 walk · 6 km
Malta's capital is a UNESCO World Heritage fortress built by the Knights of St. John in the 1560s — a city designed as a single work of art, with streets laid out on a grid and every building made from the same golden limestone. Your local guide brings this history to life as you walk through the city: the ornate interior of St. John's Co-Cathedral (home to Caravaggio's masterpiece), the Grand Masters' Palace where the Knights governed, Upper Barrakka Gardens with their panoramic harbour views, and the Malta Experience — a cinematic journey through 7,000 years of island history. Midday, you'll learn to make ftira with a local baker at Eddie's — shaping the dough, choosing toppings, and pulling your own flatbread from the oven. Lunch follows at the same spot, with your ftira as the main course.

Day 3
Mdina, Rabat & Golden Bay
2 walks · 8 km
Mdina — the "Silent City" — was Malta's capital for over a thousand years before the Knights arrived. Walk through its narrow medieval streets, visit St. Paul's Cathedral, and descend into the eerily beautiful catacombs where early Christians worshipped in secret. In Rabat, stop at a pasticceria for pastizzi — the flaky, ricotta-filled pastries that are Malta's national snack. The afternoon walk takes you to Majjistral Nature Reserve on the northwest coast — Malta's first national park. The one-way trail starts near Mellieha and follows clifftops above the Mediterranean with views to Gozo on the horizon, ending at Golden Bay as the sun drops toward the water. The coach drops you at the start and picks up at the finish. Dinner tonight is on your own — your guide will point you to the best options in St. Paul's Bay.

Day 4
South Malta — Temples, Cliffs & Fishing Boats
1 walk · 6 km combined
Today covers Malta's dramatic south coast. Begin with a 2.5 km walk along the Dingli Cliffs — the highest point on the island at 253 meters, with a trail that offers great views close to the cliff edge. Below, the Mediterranean stretches uninterrupted to Libya. Visit Hagar Qim and Mnajdra — megalithic temples built between 3600 and 2500 BC, older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Walk approximately 2 km through these UNESCO-listed sites, among the oldest free-standing structures on earth, with the coastal setting adding to their power. If the seas cooperate, take a boat ride into the Blue Grotto — a series of sea caves where the light creates electric blue reflections on the water. If the seas are rough, a photo stop from the clifftop above is equally spectacular. Lunch is a three-course Maltese feast at Liska in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, where colorful luzzu boats bob in the harbour. Walk about 1.5 km along the waterfront market before boarding the coach. This evening, dinner and a folklore show at Ta Marija in Mosta — traditional Maltese music, dancing, and a generous family-style meal you won't find on a standard tour.

Day 5
The Three Cities
1 walk · 6 km
Cross the Grand Harbour by traditional dghajsa — the brightly painted water taxis that have ferried passengers here since the Knights' era. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua) are older than Valletta and less visited, with a maritime atmosphere that feels like stepping back fifty years. Walk the Senglea waterfront past the vedette (watchtower) with its carved eye and ear — the Knights' way of saying "we're always watching." Explore Fort St. Angelo, where the Knights made their famous last stand during the Great Siege of 1565. Lunch at Don Berto in Birgu — a set menu with wine in a vaulted stone dining room that was once a bakery for the fleet. The afternoon is free to explore at your own pace.

Day 6
Malta to Gozo — Carnival Begins
1 walk · 5 km
Leave St. Paul's Bay this morning for the short ferry crossing to Gozo — Malta's smaller, greener, more rural sister island. Gozo moves at a different pace, and you'll feel it immediately. Your introduction to the island comes via tuk-tuk — five vehicles, each with five or six passengers, weaving through the countryside lanes with stops for short walks to the Dwejra Inland Sea, Ramla Bay, the salt pans, the Mixta Cave, and the Cittadella in Victoria. It's the kind of access a full-size coach can't manage, and your tuk-tuk guide knows every back road. Lunch at Il-Kartell in the old fishing village of Marsalforn — grilled fish, Gozitan wine, and a view over the salt pans. Check into the Kempinski San Lawrenz — a five-star retreat set in the Gozitan countryside, your base for the next three nights. This evening, Carnival activities are on offer in Victoria. Just below the walled Cittadella, the city comes alive with parades, floats, music, and costumed revelry. It's a 4-minute taxi from the hotel — go when you want, stay as long as you like.

Day 7
Comino Island
1 walk · 7 –8 km
A speedboat takes you across the channel to Comino — the smallest of Malta's three inhabited islands, with a permanent population of roughly four people. This is the longest walk of the tour and the most remote: a full circumnavigation of the island on trails that pass sea caves, abandoned watchtowers, and the famous Blue Lagoon — a shallow cove where the water is so clear it barely looks real. Lunch is packed from the Kempinski (no restaurants on Comino). The boat returns you to Gozo in the afternoon with time to rest before another evening of Carnival celebrations in Victoria.

Day 8
Gozo Cliffs, Wine & Farewell
1 walk · 7 km
Your final full day begins with the most dramatic walk of the tour, and the most challenging. From the fishing village of Xlendi, climb to the Sanap and Sannat Cliffs — sheer drops to the sea, views across to Malta, and a spectacular trail that follows the cliff edge through wildflowers and Mediterranean scrub. The walk is an out-and-back from Xlendi to give you the freedom to shorten the walk if you need something easier. If you have the energy, though, doing the full walk will be a true highlight. After the walk, visit Tal-Massar Winery for a tasting of three Gozitan wines paired with a ftira lunch — the farmhouse setting is quintessential Gozo. This evening, gather for the farewell dinner at Roza in Victoria — three courses, wine, and stories from the trail. Afterward, Carnival is still in full swing in the streets just outside. The perfect way to end a Malta adventure.

Day 9
Departure
After breakfast, board the coach from the Kempinski to the Gozo ferry, then across Malta to the airport. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours — book flights departing after 1:00 PM to ensure a comfortable transfer and enough time to check in for your flights home.

Before You Book

Start by browsing our tour calendar and finding the adventure that fits your interests, dates, and walking level. There are two ways to secure your spot.

Pre-register first ($200 per person): express interest before full details are released. Your $200 pre-registration deposit is fully refundable until you accept your Priority Booking Invitation. Pre-registered travelers receive a Priority Booking Invitation with one week to register before remaining space opens to the general public.

When you convert your pre-registration to a full booking, the $200 applies toward the $500 booking deposit and becomes non-refundable (an additional $300 brings the total deposit to $500). If you register directly without pre-registering, the full $500 booking deposit is also non-refundable from the moment it’s paid.

For Malta & Gozo, the balance is split into two milestones: $500 per person is due about 180 days before departure (around August 6, 2026), and the final balance is due 90 days before departure (around November 4, 2026). Payments can be made online. Final payment is non-refundable and non-transferable.

You’ll receive reminders before each milestone. About 2–3 weeks before departure, you’ll receive a final email packet with hotel names, contact information, a list of fellow travelers, and a detailed daily schedule. All registrations are subject to our General Terms & Conditions. Questions? Call us at 360.260.9393 or email fun@walkingadventures.com.

Airfare is generally not included in the tour price. The starting point for each tour is the arrival airport or first hotel. We recommend booking your own flights so you can use your preferred airline, frequent flyer miles, or travel credit. When air travel is necessary within an itinerary (such as inter-island flights in the Azores), it is usually included in the tour price. We recommend contacting Laura Pfahler, the travel agent we work with, to help book your flight arrangements. Detailed arrival and departure airport information is provided on each tour page and in your registration materials.

Pre-registration ($200 per traveler): your pre-registration deposit is fully refundable any time before you accept a Priority Booking Invitation. Browse our 2027 Pre-Registration Terms for the full details.

Full registration (booking deposit): when you convert a pre-registration to a full booking, the $200 pre-registration deposit applies toward the $500 booking deposit and becomes non-refundable. If you register directly without pre-registering, the full $500 booking deposit is also non-refundable from the moment it's paid.

Balance payments: final payment is due before departure — your tour page lists the specific dates — and is non-refundable after the due date. We'll send you a reminder a week or two before each deadline so nothing sneaks up on you.

If WAI cancels the tour: If a tour doesn't reach the minimum number of participants needed to run, WAI may cancel the departure — and if that happens, you'll receive a full refund of everything you've paid. It's rare, but we want you to know where you stand. See our General Tour Conditions for complete cancellation and refund details.

WAI believes strongly in the importance of travel insurance for financial and medical protection from unforeseen circumstances before departure or during your adventure. We recommend a policy covering trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and emergency medical expenses. Be aware that some policies contain time-sensitive provisions — benefits like coverage of pre-existing conditions may only be available if the policy is purchased within a certain number of days of booking. Airfare is generally not covered by tour travel insurance. Using SquareMouth.com is a good way to compare pricing. Other options include Allianz, Travel Guard, and Travel Insured International. WAI bears no responsibility for travel insurance benefits advertised by credit card companies — verify coverage types and limits before relying on them.

Every WAI walk uses a two-part rating: a number (1–3) for incline and a letter(A–C) for terrain. Here’s what they look like:

1Gentle (gain < 200 ft)
2Moderate (gain 200–1,000 ft)
3Steep (gain 1,000–2,000 ft)
🏙️ PavedAPaved (almost entirely on pavement)

Each tour page also has a Tour Pace rating (1–5) and a Walk Challenge rating (1–5) that summarize the overall difficulty. Use these to compare tours at a glance — then check the day-by-day itinerary for the full picture.

You'll receive a detailed packing list and final email packet about 2-3 weeks before departure, including hotel names, contact information, a list of fellow travelers, and a more detailed daily schedule. Key items for every WAI tour: well broken-in walking shoes (not new ones), layers for variable weather, a lightweight waterproof rain jacket, a small daypack for daily walks, sunscreen, and a hat. For international tours, check your tour page for destination-specific recommendations. Comfortable, modest clothing works for most group dinners — WAI tours are relaxed, not formal.
Most days begin with a group breakfast, followed by a morning walk or cultural visit. Midday includes a lunch stop — sometimes included, sometimes on your own at a local restaurant. Afternoons blend walking with sightseeing, and evenings are usually free with periodic group dinners. You'll never feel rushed, and there's always time to rest, explore on your own, or sit in a café and watch the world go by. Your guides will share a detailed daily schedule before the trip so you'll know exactly what to expect.

You don't need to be an athlete. WAI tours range from gentle strolls through city streets to more adventurous walks on hills and trails — and most walking days offer a shorter or easier alternative so you can choose your level. If you enjoy walking regularly and can handle a couple of miles at a comfortable pace, you'll find tours that fit. More experienced walkers will find plenty to challenge them too. The best preparation is to walk regularly in the weeks before your trip, gradually building up distance. Every tour page shows walk-by-walk ratings so you can see exactly what's involved — and if you're unsure, give us a call. We love helping people find the right fit.

WAI groups are small by design — every group is kept intentionally small so you're never just a face in the crowd. Two WAI guides accompany every trip (plus local national guides on international tours), which means more personal attention, better access to local experiences, and the kind of camaraderie that turns fellow travelers into lasting friends. Check your tour page for specific group size details.

Absolutely — and you won't be alone for long. Many of our travelers come solo and quickly find themselves part of the group. We offer a roommate matching service at no extra charge, or you can book a single room for a supplement (amount varies by tour). Solo travelers consistently tell us that the community feel of a WAI trip is one of the best parts.
Meal inclusions vary by tour — check your specific tour page for details. Most tours include daily breakfast, several group dinners, and select lunches. On free-meal days, your guides will recommend local restaurants that match the group's tastes and budget. Group dinners are a highlight — they're often at locally owned restaurants where the food tells a story about the place you're visiting.

With help from local experts and walking guides, Classic Curated itineraries are crafted with extensive on-site planning by WAI tour planners. Our objective is to capture the essence of a destination by weaving together its culture, history, natural beauty, and culinary traditions into a walking-centric adventure. Think of it as a fully planned trip where each day is thoughtfully designed — not a self-guided hike, not a resort stay, but an immersive journey with a small group led by experienced WAI guides.

After you register, we'll send you an Adventure Advice email with everything you need to plan your trip — recommended flights, arrival airports, timing tips, and important steps to take before departure. One big thing: please don't buy your flights until you've seen this email. It'll save you headaches and help you find the best options. Closer to departure, you'll get a final packet with hotel details, a list of your fellow travelers, and a day-by-day schedule.

If a tour departure doesn't reach the minimum enrollment needed to run, WAI reserves the right to cancel it. If that happens, registered participants receive a 100% refund of all payments made to WAI. Most tours reach minimum enrollment well in advance, and cancellations are rare — but we want you to know we stand behind our commitment if it ever happens. In cases where supplier non-refundable deposits limit what WAI can recover, we'll do our best to apply unrecovered amounts as credit toward a future tour.

Our approach to wellness on tour encourages travelers to: focus on health before the tour so you start healthy; pace yourself while on tour, as travel is inherently stimulating and can mask energy drain; stay hydrated and rested, especially on long-haul travel days and at altitude; and speak up if you're not feeling well — our guides are trained to help and would rather know early. We travel in small groups where everyone looks out for each other, and our guides carry first aid supplies and know local medical resources at every stop. Read our full Wellness on Tour Policy for details.

We choose accommodations based on three things: convenience, comfort, and location. We are not a luxury tour operator, and we are not a budget one either. We are a comfort travel company.

That means properties where you can unpack and settle in, in locations that make sense for the next day’s walk. Sometimes that is a higher-end property because the place is simply too special to pass up. Other times, the most authentic way to experience a destination is in a more modest setting — and those stays often become the most memorable ones.

Every hotel is reviewed and approved by our guide team. After every tour, we survey our travelers to make sure our choices are landing right. If something misses the mark, it does not come back.
