After flying overnight from Seattle, Pat and I made it to incredible Iceland!
While jetlag threatened to send us into nefarious narcolepsy, we managed to stay awake today as we explored a couple of beautiful walk possibilities on the south coast of the island. First stop was at Skogafoss, one of the country’s many impressive waterfalls.
While most tourists stay below to gawk at its power, we climbed to an upper viewpoint and proceeded nearly 2 km upstream past several hidden, ice-riddled cascades that were far from the tourist throngs. It was absolutely gorgeous! Donning crampons on our feet, the walking wasn’t terribly difficult or threatening.
In the afternoon, just before the sun set (at 3:30 p.m.), we ventured to Fjadrargljufur for a short and sweet stroll up a dramatically and deeply carved canyon. We may not use this walk in the winter as it was a bit more difficult than we had hoped.
But Skogafoss seems like a winter winner of a walk that we’ll hopefully use during our 2019 Iceland Northern Lights Adventure! Stay tuned and we’ll try to post more updates along the trail as we’re able.
