Iceland’s southern coast continues to amaze!
Starting with a brilliant sunrise over the ice, Pat and I started our morning previewing a couple of walks at Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park.
The first wintry stroll took us to the unique Svartifoss, a small but impressive waterfall that flows over hexagonal basalt columns.
What made this cascade even more eye-popping were the massive icicles dangling on either side and the white snow volcano that it was pouring into.
Really spectacular….and all the more because we had the place to ourselves!
Continuing our exploration in the Vatnajokull region, we took an easy but rewarding walk out to the Skaftafell Glacier.
The afternoon concluded with a glorious drive around the southeast corner of the island and a fun and frigid stop at Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon boasting a mind-boggling assortment of floating icebergs and playful seals. What a fascinating day in amazing Iceland!
